How xAI became part of SpaceX

The company timeline starts with its July 2023 announcement and the first Grok release that November. It published Grok-1 weights in March 2024 and opened its API beta in November 2024. The product range later expanded to voice, generated images, video and agent tools.

Current company and leadership

The October 2026 consumer terms identify SpaceX Super Intelligence LLC as the service company and give Austin as its principal place of business. SpaceX announced the xAI acquisition on 2 February 2026. Elon Musk is SpaceX's CEO. These facts describe the present parent and service entity; an old xAI office address does not establish the current headquarters.

Older API names can point elsewhere

The May 2026 migration retired several Grok 3, Grok 4 and Fast endpoints. Some old names now redirect to replacement models. Grok Code Fast 1 names map to Grok Build 0.1. Treat an alias as a routing name, and record the version returned by the service when comparing results.

Coverage of this catalog

Practical guidance. The entries cover the current named Grok API models reviewed here and the Grok-1 and Grok-2 weight releases. They exclude consumer subscription plans, Grok Bot workflows, Cursor models and unnamed text-to-speech service versions. A released weight model does not imply that an equivalent managed endpoint remains available.
