Company origins

The UK company was incorporated in November 2019. Stability AI's 2022 announcement identifies Emad Mostaque as its founder. That announcement followed the August 2022 release of Stable Diffusion and reported a $101 million funding round led by Coatue, Lightspeed Venture Partners and O'Shaughnessy Ventures.

Stable Diffusion began through a collaboration. The August 2022 announcement credits Patrick Esser at Runway and Robin Rombach at LMU Munich with leading the work, building on latent diffusion research. It also names support from EleutherAI, LAION and Stability AI's generative team. This history is distinct from Stability's later model releases.

Practical guidance. The founding information here follows the company's own statement. It does not present that statement as a complete record of every founding participant or early shareholder.

Leadership and ownership

Prem Akkaraju became CEO in June 2024, when a new investor group backed the company and Sean Parker became executive chairman. The current board page lists Akkaraju, Parker, filmmaker James Cameron, Greycroft's Dana Settle and Coatue's Thomas Laffont.

Stability AI announced $76 million in Series B funding in August 2026. It reported $232 million raised through equity rounds and convertible notes under Akkaraju's leadership. That figure covers the period since June 2024. The new investors included Electronic Arts, Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and AMD Ventures.

From model releases to creative products

The 2026 funding announcement describes a focus on creative production tools, applied research and professional services. Music and entertainment companies appear as both partners and investors. Stable Audio 3.0 and its DAW plugin are part of this direction.

The legal service provider depends on the customer's location. Current terms name a company incorporated in England and Wales and a Delaware corporation. These service entities and the Los Angeles headquarters should be kept distinct from the company's original UK incorporation.

Licenses and catalogue scope

The Community License permits research, non-commercial use and qualifying commercial use. Commercial users must register. Its revenue condition considers the user and affiliates, including revenue unrelated to the model. It also contains attribution and use restrictions. An Enterprise agreement is required when the license's revenue limit is exceeded.

The guides cover current named API models and major downloadable releases. Earlier language and research models remain useful records, but their cards can carry different licenses. SD 3.0 and Stable Video API deprecations do not mean that their downloadable weights have disappeared.

Practical guidance. Precision files, optimized runtimes and package formats are grouped with their underlying release. Audio autoencoders and codecs are supporting components. The catalogue does not list every older language experiment, adapter or image editing endpoint as a separate foundation model.
