NEC began as a Japanese and American joint venture
Kunihiko Iwadare and Western Electric's Tokyo representative W. T. Carleton led the formation of Nippon Electric Company. Revised treaties allowed Western Electric to hold shares and take part in management. The company was established on the day those treaty changes took effect.
Its business extends from IT services to public infrastructure
NEC reports IT Services and Social Infrastructure as its main group businesses. Its current corporate profile lists Takayuki Morita as President and CEO, with the headquarters in Tokyo's Shiba district.
cotomi has developed through several generations
The first NEC language model appeared in 2023. NEC announced cotomi v3 in July 2025, with longer inputs and stronger task planning and tool selection. In March 2026, v3 was selected for a trial in Japan's Government AI program.
Agent applications are separate from the language model
NEC cotomi Agent is a workflow-automation product sold through Microsoft Marketplace. cotomi Act captures and uses knowledge from browser work. These are system-level offerings; the reviewed announcements do not identify them as separate general language-model checkpoints.
The catalog separates current and historical releases
Practical guidance. This catalog includes cotomi v3 and the named Pro, Light, Pro v2 and Fast v2 releases. Current procurement is verified for v3. Older records preserve their published identity, but their current availability is not confirmed. Hardware names, agent products and customer-specific installations do not receive additional model pages.
