David Holz founded Midjourney after Leap Motion

Before Midjourney, David Holz co-founded Leap Motion, which developed hand-tracking technology. In a 2026 conversation hosted by Society for Science, he described customer revenue as a way to judge whether people value a product. The organization identifies him as Midjourney's founder and CEO.

A distributed research company

Midjourney says it was founded remotely. It now has offices in San Francisco, London, and New York, with staff distributed across countries. Its current careers page separates infrastructure, creative products, and medical imaging into teams.

Co–Star joined the company in July 2026

Midjourney announced its first acquisition, Co–Star, on 23 July 2026. The acquired team joined to help develop Midjourney's product and design organization. The announcement says Co–Star's founder retains control and direction of that product.

Research now extends beyond generated media

In June 2026, Midjourney introduced a prototype full-body ultrasound scanner. Partner Butterfly Network says it uses 40 of its imaging modules under a development agreement. This is a hardware research program; the announcement does not establish a generally available medical model or device.

Niji is a joint model project

The Niji series is developed with Spellbrush for anime and illustration. The project has its own website and product experience. Its models retain this shared attribution in the guides below.

The public service is subscription-based

Midjourney offers Basic, Standard, Pro, and Mega subscriptions. Features differ by plan. For example, Pro and Mega include Stealth Mode and relaxed-speed standard-definition video generation.

Public product access does not establish API access

Midjourney's guidelines say it does not provide a general API, apart from rare explicit exceptions. They prohibit unauthorized automated access. The records below therefore list product access.

How versions are organized

Practical guidance. Distinct image releases, Niji models, the Edit Model, and Video V1 have separate guides. Upscalers, resolution settings, draft generation, personalization codes, and speed tiers remain features of the relevant model. V8.0 is retired. The early alternative HD model has unconfirmed access. Other legacy entries follow the current documentation.
