From Stanford research to a company

Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford in 1995. Their search project first used the name Backrub. Google began in 1998 and worked from Susan Wojcicki's garage in Menlo Park before moving to Mountain View.

Google within Alphabet

Google incorporated in California in September 1998 and moved its incorporation to Delaware in 2003. The 2015 holding-company reorganization made Alphabet the successor public issuer. Google LLC remains a subsidiary; the public share symbols belong to Alphabet.

Google DeepMind's 2026 leadership change

Google's August 2026 announcement placed Koray Kavukcuoglu in charge of Google DeepMind as SVP, reporting to Sundar Pichai. His remit includes Gemini development, frontier research, and the Gemini application and developer teams. Demis Hassabis became Chair of Google DeepMind and Alphabet's Chief Scientist while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs.

What this selection covers

Practical guidance. This selection covers reviewed Gemini text, image, speech, video and embedding APIs, one robotics preview, and major Gemma 4, Gemma 3, Gemma 3n and specialist weights. It includes three restricted or deprecated Gemini 2.5 APIs to explain migrations. It does not list every older preview, regional Vertex AI identifier, research checkpoint, quantized package, Imagen, Veo or Lyria release.

Choose an API or a downloadable checkpoint

Practical guidance. A Gemini API name identifies a hosted service. A Gemma checkpoint needs its own serving software and hardware. Do not treat a consumer Gemini subscription as an API entitlement. For a migration, compare the complete request format, output handling, tool behavior and price before changing the model name.
