The founders chose software development

Cursor’s MIT co-founders first explored an AI email client and a computer-aided design tool. Investor a16z describes their later decision to build the programming tool they wanted to use themselves. The product combined code completion, a conversational sidebar and model choice.

From completion models to coding agents

Cursor’s custom Tab models preceded Composer. Composer 1.5 added adaptive reasoning and learned summarization in February 2026. Composer 2 introduced continued pretraining, followed by reinforcement learning for longer coding tasks.

SpaceX completed the acquisition

The August 2026 announcement confirmed completion of the acquisition process that began with an April model-training partnership. Cursor described access to SpaceX’s computing resources and joint model work, including Grok 4.6.

Models covered here

Practical guidance. These records cover the currently documented Composer 2.5 tiers, Composer 1, Tab and the custom embedding model. Older Composer 1.5 and 2 documentation routes now lead to 2.5. Grok models are listed under xAI; shared ownership does not erase their release history.
