Granite 4.1 8B

Granite 4.1 8B is the instruction-tuned version of the matching Granite 4.1 base. It supports text generation, retrieval-based answers, extraction, coding and tool use.

Model design and training

IBM uses supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement-learning alignment. The training data combines public permissively licensed instructions, internal synthetic examples and selected human-authored data. The card names 12 supported languages and fill-in-the-middle code completion.Granite 4.1 8B model card

Practical use

Practical guidance. Use this release as a stable instruction-model baseline for a move to Granite 4.2 or Switch. Test structured output and tool arguments together. A correctly formatted call can still contain the wrong value, so inspect the resulting business operation.
